Inclusive by Design: Why Responsible AI Can’t Exist Without EDI

Carleton’s Faculty of Science and Faculty of Engineering and Design are pleased to present the first ACE-EDI event of the 2026–27 academic year, featuring Juliette Strohbach, Senior Advisor, EDI at IVADO.

Through its CFREF-funded initiative, IVADO has committed to promoting the development and adoption of robust, reasoning, and responsible AI (R3AI). Integrating equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) principles into artificial intelligence (AI) research is essential to ensuring its robustness and reasoning capacity. Responsibility, in turn, means that AI must benefit society as a whole, which is only possible when it reflects the diversity of experiences, knowledge, and perspectives across its ecosystem. This is IVADO’s ambition through its 2025-2030 EDI Action Plan.

This talk will explore how EDI principles should guide the way we conduct AI research, how they shape its outcomes, and how IVADO is putting this vision into practice.

About the Speaker:

Juliette Strohbach, Senior Advisor on EDI, IVADO

Juliette is a senior EDI advisor at IVADO, an AI research consortium led by the University of Montreal. She holds a degree in international relations and international law from UQAM and a master’s in international development and globalization with a specialization in feminist and gender studies from the University of Ottawa. Juliette specializes in gender equality and human rights. Her area of expertise includes analyzing the structures and systems that affect underrepresented and overrepresented communities in Canada and elsewhere. After working in immigration law and international cooperation, Juliette shifted her focus to EDI in the research sector, notably at the Canadian Institutes of Health Research. Now at IVADO, she oversees the implementation and coordination of the EDI action plan.
