Faculty of Science Health and Safety Committee
The Occupational Health and Safety Act is built upon the principle that employees and employers must act together to ensure a healthy and safe workplace. To support this goal, the employer is responsible for establishing and maintaining a Joint Health and Safety Committee (JHSC) at the workplace. The Faculty of Science has acknowledged that for the JHSC to be effective, representatives of all parties must be committed to their responsibilities under the Occupational Health and Safety Act and must endeavour to promote a co-operative, positive, and progressive approach to dealing with health and safety issues. To that end, the Faculty of Science has developed its own Health and Safety Committee to work in conjunction with the university’s JHSC and has adopted these Terms of Reference (below) to guide its operations. The committee may review and revise these Terms of Reference at any time as deemed necessary to facilitate the ongoing effective functioning of the committee.
As well, Laboratory Safety Workshops have been developed by Emergency Health & Safety and verified by Science faculty members , and will provide general information that every person working in a laboratory should know. These workshops are for all persons working in a laboratory environment. This will include graduate students, staff or others who operate in Science laboratories. Undergraduate students are only targeted at this time if they are working on their honours project in a research laboratories.
Therefore in light of the increasing government regulation and monitoring of occupational health and safety in the workplace, as well as our ethical responsibilities to ensure our laboratories are safe, it will be mandatory for everyone supervising and/or working in a laboratory to undergo training.
