6:00PM – Keynote Address: How much life has ever existed? by Peter Crockford
Location: Richcraft Hall Atrium

How much life is on the planet? How much life has ever been on the planet? And how much life will ever be on the planet? We are living in a time where exoplanet discoveries are moving beyond distant objects that we tabulate in a spreadsheet to real worlds where we can ask questions about their atmospheric composition, their history, and their potential for habitability. As these discoveries continue to roll in, it motivates us to set up Earth as a benchmark to compare to these new worlds. A critical aspect of this pursuit is understanding our own planet and how it has evolved over the past 4.6 billion years.

In this keynote address, Dr. Peter Crockford, Professor in the Department of Earth Sciences will discuss the history of life on Earth, how we are now able to estimate how much life has ever existed and briefly project into the future about how much life will likely ever exist on this planet we call home.
