Under Northern Waters: Scuba Diving for Science in Nunavut and Northern Labrador
Join Carleton Science for a fascinating exploration beneath the surface of Canada’s northern oceans at this year’s Discovery Lecture.
At the event, Roger Bull of the Canadian Museum of Nature will discuss how scuba diving is transforming how he studies marine biodiversity in some of the most remote and challenging environments on Earth. Through striking stories and firsthand experiences, he’ll reveal how he transitioned into scientific diving and what researchers are discovering beneath the surface.
Whether you’re a student, researcher, or simply curious about the natural world, this talk will leave you with a new perspective on exploration, discovery, and the hidden ecosystems that exist beneath northern waters.
Established in 2002, the Discovery Lecture is designed to showcase and promote excellence in science journalism and is sponsored jointly by the Faculty of Science and the School of Journalism and Communication.
About the Speaker
Roger Bull is the head of the National Biodiversity Cryobank of Canada, which houses a collection of tissue and DNA samples stored at -160°C. This frozen library of genetic information about the natural world is accessible to Canadian and international biodiversity researchers.
For 25 years, Roger has been involved in biodiversity field research, primarily in Inuit Nunangat—the homeland of the Inuit in Canada.
During this time, he has hiked many kilometers across the tundra to survey plant biodiversity and hung from cliff ledges to study seabird behavior. Roger recently joined the Canadian Museum of Nature’s dive team, which studies seaweed biodiversity in collaboration with the Innu Nation of Labrador and communities in the Canadian Arctic Archipelago.
